Privacy Policy

TrillMark is a menu-bar utility for macOS that plays a custom sound — and shows an optional visual cue — for each app's notifications, so you can tell which app notified you without looking. This policy explains what data the app touches and what, if anything, ever leaves your Mac. The short version: TrillMark keeps your data on your Mac. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party trackers.

Data that stays on your Mac

TrillMark stores your rules and settings locally, in your user Library's Application Support folder (~/Library/Application Support/TrillMark/). This includes your per-app sound rules, keyword and pattern conditions, volumes, visual-cue preferences, and any custom sounds or clips you add (kept in …/TrillMark/Sounds/). These files never leave your Mac and are not sent to us or anyone else.

To do its job, TrillMark uses a single macOS permission — Accessibility. Everything it enables is processed on your device only; nothing read through it is transmitted, uploaded, or stored off your Mac:

• Accessibility — used to observe Notification Center banners as they appear, so TrillMark can tell which app posted a notification (and read its title and text, to match any keyword or pattern rules you have set) and then play the sound or show the visual cue you chose. TrillMark reads this notification text on your Mac to decide how to react, and never sends it anywhere. The message text itself is not saved to disk unless you turn on the optional message preview (the local Recent Alerts history is described below); by default only the app's name and the time are kept.

TrillMark also keeps a short, local Recent Alerts history so you can catch up on a visual cue you looked away from. By default each entry records only which app notified you and when — no message text. If you turn on Include message preview (off by default) under Settings → Recent Alerts, entries recorded from then on also store a short one-line snippet of the notification's text; existing entries are unchanged. This history is bounded to the most recent alerts so it cannot grow without limit, is kept only on your Mac (~/Library/Application Support/TrillMark/pingHistory.json), never leaves your device, and you can erase it at any time with Clear History in Settings → Recent Alerts.

TrillMark does not use Screen Recording, your Camera, your Microphone, your Contacts, or your Calendar. You can grant or revoke Accessibility at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

TrillMark only observes notifications; it does not post its own, and it does not appear in System Settings → Notifications.

When TrillMark connects to the internet

TrillMark makes network connections in only two situations, both of which you control:

1. Checking for updates. TrillMark uses the open-source Sparkle framework to check whether a newer version is available by requesting an update feed from trillmark.app. Like loading any web page, this reveals your device's IP address and the version being checked to the server hosting the feed. TrillMark does not enable Sparkle's optional system-profile reporting, and it shows a consent prompt on first run before checking automatically. You can turn automatic checks off at any time in Settings → About → Software Update.
2. Validating your license. When you enter a license key, TrillMark contacts our own license service — which we run on Cloudflare's infrastructure — to verify your purchase and register the activation to your Mac (this is how the three-device limit is enforced). This sends your license key and your Mac's device name — the computer name from your Sharing settings, such as "Schaun's MacBook Pro" — to our license service, which uses it to label the activation. That name may include text you chose (like your name) and is used only to identify your activations so the device limit can be managed; TrillMark does not compute or send a hardware fingerprint. Your license key itself is stored in your Mac's Keychain on the device where you entered it and is never written to logs. We handle your license and activation records ourselves under this Privacy Policy; they are not shared with the payment processor. Your purchase is processed by Paddle, our Merchant of Record, under Paddle's privacy policy. We do not receive or store your payment-card details.

TrillMark does not use analytics SDKs, advertising, tracking cookies, or crash-reporting services, and it does not require you to create an account.

Bug reports

If you use Report a Bug from the About screen, TrillMark pre-fills an email to us that includes your app version, macOS version, device architecture, and whether Accessibility is granted — nothing else. The email is composed in your own mail app, and nothing is sent until you choose to send it.

Data retention and deletion

Because your data lives only on your Mac, you can remove it — your rules, settings, sounds, and your Recent Alerts history — by deleting TrillMark and its ~/Library/Application Support/TrillMark/ folder. You can also clear the Recent Alerts history on its own at any time from Settings → Recent Alerts. We do not hold a copy to delete on your behalf.

Children

TrillMark is a utility not directed to children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new effective date.
