Why a reminder sounds like everything else

Calendar reminders use your Mac’s one alert sound — the same as email or chat — so the reminder for a meeting you can’t be late to sounds like a newsletter. macOS only lets you switch Calendar’s sound on or off.

Calendar’s default alert times help you get reminded earlier, but they don’t change how the reminder sounds, and there’s no way to give Calendar a distinct sound from your other apps.

What you can do without TrillMark

• Calendar’s own settings. You can set default alerts for events, all-day events and birthdays, add per-event alerts, and even a second alert — good for timing, but every alert uses the same sound.
• System Settings › Notifications › Calendar. Toggle the sound, banner vs. alert — no custom sound.
• Alert style. Setting Calendar to “Alerts” makes a reminder stay on screen until you dismiss it — helpful for not missing it, but still the same sound.
• Scripting tools. Hammerspoon or Keyboard Maestro can react to banners, with the usual setup and upkeep.

5. Turn off the system sound for Calendar in Notification settings so you hear only the sound you chose.
