Give Discord its own notification sound on your Mac

Why Discord blends in with everything else

macOS gives every app the same alert sound and only lets you turn an app's notification sound on or off — never change it. So a Discord ping sounds identical to a work email or a system alert, and you can't tell them apart by ear.

Discord is often running in the background across several servers at once, so “was that something I care about, or just a busy channel?” is a question you end up answering by stopping and looking — over and over.

What you can do without TrillMark

• Discord's own settings. Discord has fine-grained control — per-server and per-channel you can choose All Messages, Only @mentions, or Nothing, mute servers, and suppress @everyone. This is the most important step and worth setting up. But every notification that does get through still uses the one Mac sound.
• System Settings › Notifications › Discord. Toggle its sound on or off and choose banner vs. alert. There's no option to give it a sound of its own.
• A Focus. Silence Discord while you work — but that hides it rather than making it recognizable.
• Scripting tools. Hammerspoon or Keyboard Maestro can act on notifications, but they're a lot to set up and maintain just to hear Discord differently.

Set it up in about a minute

1. In Discord, set each server to Only @mentions (or mute the noisy ones) so only the pings you care about get through.
2. In TrillMark, add Discord and give it a sound you'll recognize — preview tones right in the list.
3. Pick a color for Discord and choose a full-screen wash or a quiet edge band; TrillMark labels the flash with the app's name.
4. Optional: add a rule for “when the message contains my name” with a louder sound, so direct pings stand out.
5. Turn off the system sound for Discord in Notification settings so you hear only the sound you chose.
