Give WhatsApp its own notification sound on your Mac

So a message meant just for you doesn’t sound exactly like a group of forty people you muted in your head but not on your Mac.

Why WhatsApp gets lost in the pile

WhatsApp Desktop hands its notifications to macOS, which plays the same single alert sound it uses for everything else. A busy group thread and a direct message from family arrive with the identical chime, so the ones that matter get buried under the ones that don’t.

macOS only lets you switch WhatsApp’s sound on or off — never change it — and WhatsApp’s own desktop settings don’t offer a distinct Mac sound either.

What you can do without TrillMark

How TrillMark makes WhatsApp stand out

TrillMark reacts to the banner WhatsApp shows through macOS. Add WhatsApp, choose a sound and a color, and its messages arrive as a sound you recognize plus a labeled flash — so you know it’s WhatsApp without stopping to look.

Because TrillMark can read the notification, you can go further: a WhatsApp group banner usually shows the group’s name, while a direct message shows a person’s name — so a rule can play a louder sound for a specific person, or tuck group noise behind a soft tone or none at all.

It reads that text only on your Mac, only to decide how to react, and never sends it anywhere.

Set it up in about a minute

  1. Open TrillMark and add WhatsApp.
  2. Give it a sound you’ll know by ear and a color; TrillMark labels the flash with the app’s name.
  3. Optional: add a rule for a key person’s name with a louder sound, or one that softens a busy group.
  4. Turn off the system sound for WhatsApp in Notification settings so you hear only the sound you chose.

Questions about WhatsApp

Can I set a custom notification sound for WhatsApp on Mac?

Not with WhatsApp or macOS alone — WhatsApp Desktop uses your Mac’s single alert sound, and macOS only lets you turn that sound on or off. TrillMark reacts to the notification and plays a sound you choose, with a colored, labeled flash, so WhatsApp is easy to pick out.

Can TrillMark alert me differently for a group versus a direct message?

Usually yes. A WhatsApp group banner tends to show the group’s name and a direct message shows a person’s name, so you can add a rule that fires only for a specific person or that softens group chatter. The text is read only on your Mac and never leaves it.

Does muting a WhatsApp group also silence it in TrillMark?

Yes. If WhatsApp doesn’t post a banner for a muted chat, TrillMark has nothing to react to, so muted chats stay silent. You can also handle it the other way with a TrillMark rule.
