Why Messenger sounds like everything else on your Mac

The Messenger app for Mac uses your Mac's one notification sound, just like every other app. macOS only lets you switch that sound on or off per app — never change it — so a message from a close friend chimes exactly like a reminder, an email, or a busy group thread.

For a chat app you leave open all day, that means stopping to look every time, even when it turns out to be another “someone sent a sticker” in a group you're only half following.

What you can do without TrillMark

• Messenger's own settings. You can mute individual conversations for a while, hide message previews, and turn Messenger's in-app sounds on or off — but every conversation that does notify you still uses the same sound.
• System Settings › Notifications › Messenger. Toggle its banner sound on or off and choose banner vs. alert style. That's the full extent of the per-app sound control macOS gives you.
• A Focus. Do Not Disturb or a custom Focus can hold Messenger back during focused time, but that hides it rather than making it recognizable.
• Muting the noisy chats. Muting a group thread inside Messenger cuts the volume of noise, but it doesn't make the people you do want to hear sound any different.

2. Give it a sound you'll know by ear and preview it right in the list.
3. Pick a color for Messenger and choose a full-screen wash or a quiet edge band; TrillMark labels the flash with the app's name.
4. Optional: add a rule — “when the message contains a name you choose” — with a louder sound, so the people closest to you stand out from the group chats.
